Accessibility Guidelines
We have designed The Mercers’ Company website so that it is easy for you to find
your way around and easy for you to read.
These brief guidelines are for users who may need a little more assistance, and
enable them to enjoy the experience of using both The Mercers’ Company website
and other websites available through the internet.
About website “Accessibility”
The design and programming of The Mercers’ Company website follows recognised
Accessibility guidelines that apply to all websites – often referred to as W3C
WAI. The guidelines have been drawn up jointly by government, disability organisations
and computer specialists.
The guidelines help people with poor eyesight, blindness or other physical disabilities
to gain access to website information and services. The standard to which The
Mercers’ Company website has been developed is called W3C WAI Level A.
Useful additional equipment
If you suffer from disabilities, you can buy additional equipment that will help
you use your computer better and gain more access to websites. For example, you
can change to a special ‘mouse’ that makes navigation easier, or install software
that can ‘read’ to you what’s on the screen through your computer’s speakers or
headphones.
For more advice we suggest you contact your local social services department
or visit the websites of the Government’s Disability Unit at www.disability.gov.uk or the Royal National Institute of the Blind at www.rnib.org.uk.
Using the internet at public access points
Many local authorities now provide community access to the internet at convenient
locations, often at public libraries. To find your nearest local access point
for internet access, please contact your local authority information centre.
