Mercers' Hall and Chapel
The Mercers’ Company has been settled on the site of its present Hall at least
since the end of the 14th Century. The third and present Mercers’ Hall, was built between 1954 and 1958, opening
in May 1958. The Architect was E Noel Clifton of Gunton and Gunton.
The basic plan of the present Hall follows that of the second, with an Ambulatory
and Chapel on the ground floor, behind a façade of Cheapside shops, with the Livery
Hall and other ceremonial rooms above.
Private Chapel
The Mercers’ Company is the only City Livery Company to have its own private
chapel. The chapel is used for many Company events and two public sermons each year. Please note that the chapel is not available for public hire.
Public Sermons
There are several ancient trusts providing for the preaching of sermons in Mercers'
Chapel. Gifts and bequests for sermons were amalgamated to meet present day requirements
and two public sermons are now preached in the chapel each year - one in Advent
and one in Lent.
The Hall is available for public hire at the discretion of the Master and Wardens.
