Painting of the entrance and staircase of the Second Mercers' Hall in 1881The second Hall, designed by Edward Jarman and John Oliver, was built between 1667 and 1676 and opened in May 1676.

The second Hall was extensively refurbished during the period 1877 to 1881. The frontage was remodelled by George Barnes Williams and the interiors were redesigned by John Gregory Crace, the renowned and fashionable Victorian designer.

Further restoration was also carried out in 1926-30, but on the night of 10/11 May 1941 the Hall was completely destroyed by fire during an air raid in the Second World War.
