Henry Howard, Earl of Northampton
The Earl of Northampton's Charity
Shortly before his death Henry Howard, Earl of Northampton (1540-1614), founded
an almshouse for the poor men of Greenwich, known as Trinity Hospital and, although he was not a member of the Company, he chose to entrust the management
of his almshouse to the Mercers’ Company.
The original Trinity Hospital, completed in 1616 beside the Thames at Greenwich,
is currently closed awaiting major refurbishment following the opening of a new
almshouse, the Garden Building, in its grounds. The Garden Building provides 31
self contained flats and a resident warden. The refurbishment of the original
Grade II* listed almshouse will provide a further 14 self contained flats.
Under the same trust an almshouse for eight married couples was built at Shotesham
in Norfolk, the founder’s birthplace, in 1885. A number of out-pensions and allowances
are also paid from Northampton’s estate.
