The Company seeks to improve the availability and quality of educational opportunities for children and young adults, especially in London and in particular areas of the West Midlands - Walsall, Sandwell and Telford - where the Company has established City Academies in recent years. The Company's funding policy includes a strong emphasis on the State maintained sector, by the provision of:
 
Advice and guidance
Dissemination of good practice
Financial help
 
Exclusions:
Unless there has been previous significant involvement with the organisation concerned, the Company does not support applications for:
  • Specialist school status
  • Sponsorship of City Academies
  • Assistance with the payment of rents, salaries or running costs
  • Establishment or development of bursary funds at independent schools
  • Organisations seeking grants for the erection, maintenance or repair of buildings
  • Educational programmes overseas
Potential projects
The Company is particularly interested in, and will give priority to:
  • Projects which encourage participation in Science, Maths and Technology
  • Educational projects for young people aged 5 to 19
  • Projects linked to improving boys' educational achievement
  • Citizenship projects (including "critical skills" initiatives e.g. debating)
  • Exceptional or innovative projects that use art, drama, dance, music and sport to enrich and extend educational opportunity
  • Educational initiatives for disadvantaged groups, such as young people from refugee and asylum communities
The Company may also consider projects which:
  • Promote the effective management of schools and colleges, where the grant encourages the enhancement of educational opportunity and curricular provision
  • Provide help for children and young adults with special educational needs, including the development of gifted and talented young people
  • Provide ways of increasing parental and community support for learning
  • Encourage educational progression beyond 16, acquiring of vocational skills and participation in Higher Education
Applicants
Applicants must be:
  • UK charities registered with the Charity Commission, or
  • UK charities that are exempt from registration under the 1993 Charities Act or
  • Educational establishments in the State maintained sector.
