We encourage appeals within the following category from a wide variety of sources under the general heading ‘advancement of religion’.  These are not exclusively from Anglican organisations, but we discourage appeals from overseas unless there is a UK charitable arm.  Appeals may be broadly grouped into those relating to buildings and those connected with people; we look particularly sympathetically on the latter.

Buildings 
We aim to help keep churches alive, but consider only appeals from:
  • Churches in the City of London.
  • Churches with a Mercer connection – historic (to see church patronage click here) or a present Mercer closely involved.
  • Cathedrals, as their funding sources are often limited.
  • Grade I and Grade II* churches outside these criteria and high-profile historic memorabilia may be considered by the Heritage and Arts Committee if of particular importance.  Other churches should look to the National Churches Trust, to whom we make an annual grant.
People                                               
We aim to contribute to deepening understanding and acceptance of the Christian religion, and to developing its relationships between its denominations and with other world faiths.  We seek appeals that:                                  Lee Abbey, Devon
  • Develop understanding and tolerance between denominations and faiths.                   
  • Help young people to learn about the Christian faith and develop their spiritual lives.
  • Support clergy and help them to develop their outreach work.
  • Provide spiritual training for clergy and lay people.
  • Provide respite, recuperation and spiritual nourishment for clergy and their families.
  • Improve the effectiveness of parish administration through support for core costs for key people.
